From the exterior, the architecture presents a formidable facade, exuding solidity and strength. Its monolithic presence commands attention, evoking a sense of timelessness and endurance. However, as one steps through its threshold, a remarkable transformation occurs, revealing a world of transparency and interconnectedness.
Beyond the Wall was selected as a Finalist at the Verde Family Guest House Competition, in Portugal.
Inspired by the artistry of the Chinese Wapan technique, the enclosing wall showcases a harmonious fusion of regional Portuguese materials. Limestone rubbles and reclaimed clay roof tiles intertwine, uniting heritage and sustainability in a cost-effective manner.
This wall stands as a testament to resourcefulness, breathing new life into discarded materials while embracing an artistic expression that seamlessly integrates with the landscape.
Inside, the guest house reveals itself as an inviting sanctuary, where the boundaries between interior and exterior blur. Walls of glass and open spaces dissolve the barriers, allowing nature to flow effortlessly into every corner. This intentional design fosters a deep sense of harmony and belonging, as the rhythms of the surrounding environment become an integral part of the living experience.
At the heart of this haven lies a smaller courtyard, acting as a gentle divider that separates the private bedrooms, communal gathering spaces, and serene meditation areas. Here, the interplay of light, sound, and natural elements creates a serene atmosphere, encouraging introspection and tranquility.
